Welcome back to the Meet Our Team Q&A series. My name is Daniela Williams, Project Manager at ISE, and I’ll be asking ISE team members questions to help give insight into what makes us tick.
Today I'm interviewing John (Johnny) Muir, Software Engineer, and one of our more recent team members in the Plano, Texas office.
Q. How long have you worked at ISE and what did you do prior?
Johnny: I have worked at ISE for 10 months. Before starting here, I worked as a Software Engineer at Raytheon for a year and a half. Prior to that, I was a Nuclear Submarine Officer in the US Navy for 5 years. I served as the Mechanical Division Officer on the USS Florida.
Q. How did your experience in the Navy prepare you for your career in software engineering?
Johnny: To start, I made the fortunate decision to study Computer Science at the Naval Academy, which got me interested in programming. Additionally, my experience helped me practice teamwork and patience, both of which are necessary when developing software on a large scale. I also developed an exceptional ability to pay attention to the small details, which is highly valuable when working with any kind of software.
Q. You left the defense world for the trucking world. What are some unexpected similarities between the two?
Johnny: One similarity is that the work in both industries is challenging and requires critical thinking. Another is that just like the defense world, the trucking world has many regulations that need to be adhered to.
Q. Last week ISE attended the UT Dallas career fair. What would you say to new graduates is the best thing about working at ISE and in the Plano office?
Johnny: I say that we’re an organization that does a good job with Agile practices. We’re also less rigid and formal than many of the other companies at the career fairs. There’s something to be said for working at a small organization where most of the employees know each other. The Plano office is great because we’re a tight-knit group, and we’re always down for a spontaneous Nerf battle.
Q. What do you do for fun?
Johnny: I spend time with my wife, our 3 dogs, and our 2 cats. I enjoy fixing things, and I regularly fix stuff around the house. This gives me a lot of time to listen to podcasts; some of my favorites are Stuff You Should Know, American History Tellers, the Ron Burgundy Podcast, and the Best of Car Talk. My wife and I sing in our church choir together. We’re the youngest folks in the choir by about 30 years, but we don’t mind. Being a native Texan, I take every opportunity I can to remember The Alamo. If you ever visit the fantastic historical site, you may even catch a glimpse of me taking a picture there with my lovely wife.
