Welcome back to the Meet Our Team Q&A series. My name is Daniela Williams, Project Manager at ISE, and I’ll be asking ISE team members questions to help give insight into what makes us tick.
Today I'm interviewing Hass Machlab, ISE's CEO and President. This month is ISE’s 14th anniversary! Read on to learn how ISE has adapted to change over the last 14 years and what plans are in store for the next 14.
Q. What did you do prior to founding ISE and why did you decide to start ISE?
Hass: I am originally from the Canary Islands, Spain. I came to the US to get my BS and MS in Electrical Engineering. Through a series of circumstances, I ended up working as a software engineer at Rockwell in their Land Transportation Engineering department, where I learned a lot about software engineering processes as well as transportation technology, on-board computers, regulations, and other areas. After Rockwell, I worked as the VP of Engineering at two companies building great technology teams. Over the years, our engineering team applied state of the art technology for several industries in addition to the transportation technology. We always stayed on top of the latest technology and processes to help our customers meet their objectives.
I've always considered myself an entrepreneur, and at one point an opportunity came up to start ISE with some of the best software engineers I know. We talked about it, and I founded ISE with the objective to keep providing software engineering talent to apply technology to solve complex problems for our customers and partners. It has been an amazing 14 years since then!
Q. What are you most proud of about ISE and ISE Fleet Services?
Hass: I am most proud of the team of talented people that we assembled. The ISE team is constantly working on talent growth to keep up with current technology and scouting future technologies. Together we have been able to build an award winning culture. ISE is rewarding, fun, forward looking, and focused on helping build relationships, earn trust, and provide great value to our customers. Among the many awards that we have won over the years, my favorite is the "Iowa's Top Workplaces" award, which we have won 4 years in a row.
Q. How has the industry changed in the past 14 years?
Hass: We have gone through a fascinating technological and information transformation, focused on the personalization of technology and information. Clearly, personal devices, mobile computing, wireless technologies, data analytics, Internet of Things, Big Data, Agile, social media, etc. have had a major impact on our personal lives, services, and products. All of these technologies have affected every industry in our world. Also directly related to that, is the importance to understand the specific domain/industry and how to apply or use technology to solve a specific problem or address a need.
Q. Where do you see ISE and ISE Fleet Services in the next 14 years?
Hass: The ISE team has a great depth of experience that has been built over the years. We continue to build our infrastructure to handle our growth and positioning for the next decade. It is our vision that we will continue to be a company that helps our customers with state of the art technology, building the capabilities and personal growth of our team members, maintaining a positive culture and producing quality products. With ISE FS, we are excited to keep providing a great product to our partners and customers that meet their regulatory as well as operational needs, and continually expand our services to match their growing needs to adapt to industry requirements.
Q. What do you do for fun?
Hass: I am very lucky in that I have quite a bit of fun with my job. I really enjoy technology, the people I work with, and our partners. I also like to volunteer in our community and help new entrepreneurs that are seeking mentorship. Outside of that, my favorite thing to do is to go on trips with my family. This summer we went on a tour of the national parks located around Colorado, Utah, and Arizona. It was an amazing experience. We also love to go skiing in Colorado. It is definitely a favorite. Going back to the Canary Islands and visiting my family, friends, and hanging out by the ocean is just awesome, too. I also greatly enjoy golfing with my son and my friends, biking and sailing.
