Welcome back to the Meet Our Team Q&A series. My name is Daniela Williams, Project Manager at ISE, and I’ll be asking ISE team members questions to help give insight into what makes us tick.
Today I'm interviewing Cassie Lacina, Human Resources Representative, and usually the first person prospective employees need to impress.
Q. How long have you worked at ISE and what did you do prior?
Cassie: I have been with ISE since Mid-June of this year. Before I was with ISE I worked for The University of Iowa Health Care. I Started as a student clerk in 2012 processing work comp claims and matching medical records to EOBs before being promoted to Student Supervisor, where I oversaw over 50 students working around the clock shifts. I was awarded UIHC’s second HR internship my last year of college in 2014 and from there joined the department of Patient Financial Services Human Resources Team full time until 2018 and was in charge of all HR functions including creating emergency evacuation plans, training different departments on various aspects of FMLA, ADA, FLSA, and providing training over effectively managing conflict and handling difficult conversations. In 2019 I joined the department of Anesthesia where I worked with nurses and faculty members, and created various protocols and training programs that are still used throughout the hospital.
Q. ISE team members are about to head out to career fairs at local colleges in Iowa and Texas. What are some of the attributes we look for in interns and new graduates?
Cassie: My goal is to find a candidate who will be an excellent culture fit. ISE has such an amazing culture and I hope to continue that tradition with any new additions to our family. I also want to ensure we are finding people with the technical skills or learning ability to seamlessly join our teams, and help us to build the relationships between coworkers, as well as relationships between our customers and those we serve.
Q. ISE is continuing to expand our team. What advice do you have for those looking to join ISE?
Cassie: My advice is always to just relax. Interviews are not fun and a lot of people worry about them too much. Be genuine in who you are, and explain your job and history to me as if I were in 5th grade and have no clue what you are talking about. The hardest interview I ever had was an interview with my boss and coworker where I was essentially interviewing to keep my job (move from contract to permanent). I interviewed against someone who had 20 years more experience than I did, but because I went in there confidently and pretended I didn’t know them and they had no clue what I did, I was able to explain everything in depth and it got me the job! Be confident in your skills and history and you will get pretty far.
Q: Job seekers have so many career options. Why should they choose ISE?
Cassie: ISE is a company that truly cares about it’s employees! There are so many opportunities for growth and work/life balance it’s amazing. Culture wise, I am still astounded every single day that I come into work and everyone is happy and excited to be here. If you need help people jump at the opportunity to help you out, no matter what it is. The fact that ISE has such a strong push towards employee satisfaction is something that really drew me to the company and I especially love that we have committees to ensure this is a fun place to work with activities both during and after business hours.
Q: What do you do for fun?
Cassie: I love to get outside if I have plans! I am a primitive tent camper through and through, and just this summer I learned that my 9 month old puppy is an amazing camping buddy! We go canoeing and kayaking whenever the opportunity arises, and when it starts to get colder outside I enjoy working on projects inside the house. So far I have built a coffee table and a sofa table, and my next project is an entryway bench, but so far it’s just a dresser that has been sitting in my living room for about 4 months gathering coupons I will never use. I try to catch as many Hawkeye Football games and Wrestling meets in person as possible, but deep down my favorite way to watch football is at home with all the crock pot dips and snacks I can make!
