As engineers we sit most of the day at our desks or in meetings. Other than the walk between meetings and the break room, or the occasional use of the standing desk, we're sitting. To get people up and moving, ISE's Fun Committee has hosted a poker walk for the past three years.
Wondering what a poker walk is?
Participants walk a predetermined route for 1 kilometer or 30 minutes. At different stops during the walk someone will be standing with a deck of cards. As participants pass a checkpoint they draw a card, record what it was, and give it back. After stopping at all 5 checkpoints, they see what kind of poker hand they have. Prizes are then awarded for the best and worst hands. It's great because no prior knowledge of poker is required, and skill nor speed is a factor, encouraging more employees to join in on the fun!
Healthiest State Initiative
This year ISE teamed up with Iowa's Healthiest State Initiative. The initiative’s goal is to make Iowa the healthiest state in the nation. One of the ways to reach that goal is by bringing communities together with an organized Healthiest State Walk in all of Iowa’s 99 counties. For more than five years, hundreds of thousands of Iowans have taken part in the annual walk on the first Wednesday of October.
There as so many benefits to walking! Increasing your physical activity level will significantly reduce your risk of chronic disease and premature death, and support positive mental health and healthy aging. It also helps the environment. Incorporating a little fun with some exercises is great encouragement to get everyone active!
